Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2026
LunArc is built for photographers who want to plan their shots with care. We've applied the same care to your privacy. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and what we never do.
LunArc requires no account and no personal information. You are identified only by an anonymous ID. Your location never leaves your device — it is used on your phone to do the maths, and nothing more. You can connect an Apple ID if you want your photos recoverable on a new phone; even then, we ask Apple for nothing about you.
Who we are
LunArc is developed and published by The Massive Works Company LLC. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at hello@getlunarc.com.
What we collect
LunArc collects the minimum necessary to make the app work:
- Location (GPS) — used to calculate moon rise and set times, compass heading, and moon window predictions for your saved shots. Your coordinates are stored only on your device, in the app's private database. They are never uploaded to our servers, they are not embedded in the photos we back up, and they never appear in analytics. We do not sell or share your location because we do not have it.
- Camera — photos you take in LunArc are stored locally on your device and backed up to private cloud storage (Supabase) associated with your anonymous ID. No other LunArc user can read them; see Photo storage and security for the limits of that.
- Device motion and orientation — compass heading, pitch, and tilt at the moment you take a photo. Used solely to calculate the field of view for moon window predictions.
- Anonymous usage analytics — basic event data (e.g. "user opened app", "moon window viewed") associated only with a randomly generated anonymous ID. No name, email, or personal identity is ever attached to this data. Used to understand how the app is used so we can improve it.
What we never collect
- Your name, email address, or any personal identity — including when you sign in with Apple, where we request neither
- Your contacts, calendar, or any other app data
- Any data for advertising purposes
- Any data sold to third parties
Your anonymous ID
On first launch, LunArc signs you in anonymously with Supabase. This produces a random identifier with no connection to your name, email, or any real-world identity — it exists so your photos can be stored privately and returned only to you.
This ID is kept in your device's secure keychain, which means it survives deleting and reinstalling the app. That is deliberate: it is what allows your photo backups to still be there if you reinstall LunArc or move to a new phone. It also means reinstalling does not give you a fresh identity.
You can delete your account, and everything attached to it, at any time from Settings in the app. See Data retention and deletion below.
Sign in with Apple
Connecting your Apple ID is optional. Without it, LunArc works exactly as described above — the only difference is that your photo backups are reachable only from a device that still has your anonymous ID.
We ask Apple for nothing about you. Sign in with Apple can share your name and email address; LunArc requests neither. All we receive is the anonymous identifier Apple issues for this app, which lets us recognise the same person signing in on a different phone. It is not your Apple ID, not an email address, and cannot be used to contact you.
Connecting your Apple ID attaches it to the anonymous account you already have — your existing shots and photos stay exactly where they are.
Third-party services
LunArc uses the following third-party services:
- Sign in with Apple — optional, and used only to recognise you on another device. LunArc requests no name or email. Governed by Apple's privacy policy.
- Apple WeatherKit — provides current weather data (temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, visibility) for your current location. Subject to Apple's WeatherKit terms. Weather data is fetched in real time and not stored.
- Supabase — provides secure cloud storage for your photos and anonymous analytics events. Photos are stored in a private bucket accessible only via time-limited signed URLs. Supabase processes data in accordance with their privacy policy.
Photo storage and security
Photos you take in LunArc are stored in two places:
- Locally on your device in the app's private file system
- In a private Supabase Storage bucket, accessible only via time-limited signed URLs generated by the app
Photos are associated with your anonymous ID only, and access rules on the storage bucket mean no other LunArc user can read them. Within the app, only your device can generate a signed URL to view your photos.
To be straightforward about the limits of that: we operate the storage account, so our administrators are technically able to access stored files. We access them only where it is necessary to run or debug the service, and we do not browse, share, or sell your photos. Supabase, as our storage provider, can likewise access data in the course of operating their platform.
Data retention and deletion
Your shots — locations, headings, and moon window predictions — live only on your device, so deleting the app removes them.
Photo backups remain in cloud storage until you delete the shot in LunArc. Deleting a shot deletes the backed-up photo as well; if your device is offline at the time, the deletion is queued and completed the next time the app runs.
Anonymous analytics events are retained for up to 12 months and then deleted automatically.
Deleting everything. Settings → Delete account removes your backed-up photos, your analytics events, and your account itself from our servers, and clears your shots and photos from this device. It takes effect immediately and cannot be undone. No email, no waiting.
If you would rather we handled it, or you no longer have the app installed, write to hello@getlunarc.com and we will action it within 30 days.
Where your data is stored
Photo backups and analytics events are held in cloud infrastructure operated by Supabase, and may be processed in a country other than your own. Supabase's handling of that data is governed by their privacy policy. Everything else — your shots, coordinates, and moon window calculations — stays on your device.
Your choices
- Camera, location, motion, and notification permissions can each be revoked at any time in iOS Settings. LunArc keeps working without them, but shots taken afterwards cannot be positioned accurately.
- Moon window reminders are scheduled on your device. No reminder content is sent to us or to Apple's push servers.
- Connecting your Apple ID is optional, and we request no name or email from Apple when you do.
- Deleting a shot in LunArc removes it from your device and from cloud storage.
- To remove everything, including your account: Settings → Delete account, in the app.
Children's privacy
LunArc is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of LunArc after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
